The NSW Legislative Council’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice is currently examining the management of silicosis in the manufactured stone industry as part of its annual review of the NSW Dust Diseases Scheme. This e-brief is a modified version of a paper that the Research Service produced for the Committee in October 2021. It provides an overview of developments at the State and Commonwealth level since the Committee’s 2019 report on this issue. Those developments include: the latest silicosis data in NSW and other States; government actions to prevent, monitor and manage silicosis; improvements in silicosis health screening; research into new diagnostic techniques and treatments; and the National Dust Disease Taskforce’s Final Report.
