The JobSeeker Payment (ages 22 to 64) and Youth Allowance (Other) (ages 16 to 21) are available to people who are looking for work, or who are sick or injured and temporarily unable to do their normal work or study. The table and graphs show JobSeeker recipient (total JobSeeker Payment and Youth Allowance (Other)) numbers for NSW, and estimates for all 93 NSW electorates.
JobSeeker data changed from quarterly to monthly from June 2020 onwards. Ranks are based on the proportion of the population who are JobSeeker recipients. The table can be filtered by clicking on the column headings or by using the search function.
The overlap between people defined as unemployed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and those receiving unemployment benefits is far smaller than might be expected. JobSeeker Payment and Youth Allowance (Other) recipients could be counted using ABS standard labour force classifications as either unemployed, underemployed or not in the labour force. Additional information is available on the connection between JobSeeker data and the unemployment rate, the impact of COVID-19 on JobSeeker numbers, methodology and the division of the 93 electorates into nine regions.
Explore the data further by downloading JobSeeker estimates for March 2019 to October 2021. The Research Service also publishes maps on a 6-monthly basis that show more detailed JobSeeker data, enabling visual comparison of JobSeeker Payment and Youth Allowance (Other) data across the State.
