Qualifications, occupations and interests
Naval Seaman and Pastoralist. Educated at Eton from 1828 - 1833. Entered the Navy and became a midshipman. Corpus Christi College at Cambridge from 1837 - 1838; to Sydney in 1839. Leased Cashbury in New England district. With Gilbert Elliott took up Eton Vale, Darling Downs, September 1840. By 1874 the property had been converted from leasehold to 90,000 acres freehold, had 83,000 sheep. General superintendent of Australian Agricultural Company 1856 - 1861. Director of Bank of Queensland 1863 - 1864. Travelled through England and Europe 1862 - 1867; settled in England 1870; bought Clopton estate near Stratford-on-Avon 1873 and lived the life of a country squire. Became sheriff of Warwickshire 1881 - 1882 and mayor of Stratford-on-Avon 1883 - 1888. . represented Queensland at exhibitions in London, Paris and Vienna. On Darling Downs had been an unofficial leader of 'Pure Merinos'. prime mover of Moreton Bay and Northern Districts Separation Association.
