Son of Thomas Coonan, gaol warder, and his wife Ann Birmingham. Married (1) Harriett Elizabeth Hollingdale on 7 May 1879 at Camperdown and had no issue. Married (2) Rebecca Agnes Wales on 15 December 1901, at Randwick, and had no issue. Divorced. Married (3) to Isabella Jane Peterson and had no issue. His first and third marriages were Roman Catholic ceremonies and his second marriage was in the Church of England. Roman Catholic funeral.
