At age thirteen joined Midland Railway Company., engine driver by 1878; original member of Railwaymen's Provident Society in 1867, helped to found the Locomotive Engine Drivers, Firemen and Cleaners Association from 1887 until 1913, Federal Secretary from 1900 until 1911; editor in 1913; after political defeat became a clerk, executive member of the Trades and Labour Council (TLC); a founder of Railway and Tramway Hospital fund; member of first committee Railway Institute; member of Australian Socialist League in 1894; founder of Newtown Literary and Debating Society; secretary of Erskineville Benevolent Society; director of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital from 1913 until 1933; Freemason
