Printer. Educated in a public school. Passed the preliminary examination as a pupil teacher. Apprenticed to Eyre and Spottiswoods, government printers, where worked until 1873. Emigrated to America. Joined Typographical Association in New York.; worked in Boston and Chicago. Returned to London in 1874. Member of London Society of Compositors over 12 years. Arrived in Australia hoping to benefit health in 1887. Worked in government printing office. Joined Sydney Typographical Association and was on board of management for 6 years. Delegate to the Trades and Labor Council (TLC) and president in 1891.
