Qualifications, occupations and interests
Miller and agriculturalist. Country entrepreneur. Educated in France; graduated with a Bachelor of Letters in 1853. Became a Professor of College of Gap, teaching English from 1854 until 1856. Took a years leave and arrived in Melbourne with Augustus Nicholas March in 1857. Prospected at Emu Flat in Ararat, Ballarat and Chiltern. Journeyed to Forbes during the Lachlan River rush in 1862, where set up as general merchants and started a sawmill at Scone. Became a contractor building bridges, gaols and police barracks. Partnership dissolved in 1901. Established a large orchard and vineyard and built a substantial cellar and began commercial production of wine. Pioneered irrigation in district and built weirs on Lachlan. Life member of Forbes Pastoral, Agricultural and Horticultural Association. Foundation trustee and director of Forbes Hospital from 1900 until 1918.

Son of Etienne Bernard, farmer, and Elizabeth Charriere Rond. Married Margaret Kerr on 13 August 1861 at Wahgunyah and had issue 4 daughters and 3 sons. Roman Catholic. Funeral at Forbes cemetery from St Lawrence's Roman Catholic Church.
