Founded Good Templars Lodge at East Maitland in 1878. Grand Chief Templar in 1881.
Qualifications, occupations and interests
Orchardist. Educated at public school in Galston, Scotland. Journeyed to Glasgow in 1859; worked for McPhun, publishers representing the firm in Edinburgh and Bristol; conducted own publishing business in Bristol. Arrived in New South Wales with his family on 25 September 1876, on the ship 'Brisbane', out of London. Became principal of A. Hutchison & Son, book and picture importers and publishers. Their head office was in Maitland East, and had branches in Sydney, Newcastle, Tamworth and Tinonee, on the Manning River. Selected land at Galston in New South Wales c.1885. Managed the Casual Labour Farm at Pitt Town for eight years before retiring to his orchard at Upper Galston (now Arcadia) which he named after his native town of Galston, in Scotland.

Married Martha Bryce at Townforte, Darvel, Scotland, on 23 january 1857 and they had one daughter (Martha) and two sons (John and Alexander; John died in infancy). Methodist. Both Alexander and Martha Hutchison are buried in the Uniting Church Cemetery, Derriwong Lane, Dural, in unmarked graves.
