Produce merchant. Educated under J.B Chivers, St Anstell. Arrived in Sydney in 1854. Worked in Shoalhaven district, clearing land until 1856. Settled in Sydney; became a storeman and then managed a produce business. Established firm of Hawken and Vance, produce merchants; author.

Personal
Son of William Hawken and Phillipa Harding. Married Mary Jane Vance on 24 July 1861 and had issue, 5 sons and 8 daughters. Methodist. Funeral at Rookwood cemetery with Methodist rites.
