Qualifications, occupations and interests
Carrier and forwarding and commercial agent. Arrived with parents in 1836. Educated at Parramatta by W.Breathom and S.Owens, and briefly at The Kings School. Went to sea at age 9 as an apprentice and served out articles. Worked with a London architectural firm Laugher, Dwyer & Co. Attracted by gold and arrived in Melbourne in 1852. Worked on fields in Victoria and New South Wales until 1855, joined a steam navigation company and became first officer. Joined goldrush and worked as a labourer. Joined a partnership in 1875 as general carriers and forwarding and commercial agents. Contracted with Department of Railways. Prosecuted for defrauding the Department of Railways in 1886; case discharged in 1887. Trustee of Savings Bank of New South Wales and of Kuringai Chase. Commissioner for international exhibitions in 1886 and 1883. Freemason. Deputy District Grand Master (English Constitution).
Military Service
Ensign in Sydney Battalion Volunteer Infantry in 1873, lieutenant 1874, major in 1885, lieutenant colonel in 1898; retired as an Honorary Colonel in 1902. Managed despatch of the Sudan contingent in 1885.
