Lawyer (solicitor) and Pastoralist. Educated in Hobart Town, Sydney College under W.T Cape, and in 1843 at Tonbridge, England. Returned to Van Diemen's Land in 1844; articled to Robert Pitcairn. Admitted as a solicitor in 1849; became a partner with Charles Lowe from 1850 until 1852, practised alone until 1864. Solicitor to the Australian Mutual Provident Society almost continuously from 1850. Trustee and director of Perpetual Building and Investment Society. In 1860s with Edward Knox held several pastoral runs in Queensland. On council of Law Institute of New South Wales. On committee of volunteer club. Devout Anglican. Member of first and second Sydney Diocesan synods of 1866 and 1870; active member of standing committee; lay representative on Provincial Synod in 1869. On committee of Anti-Transportation Association of 1850.
