Lawyer (barrister). Educated at Rugby School, England under Dr Thomas Arnold. Became a private tutor. Entered Middle Temple, London; called to the Bar in 1844; barrister on Western circuit and in London. Arrived in Sydney on 26 February 1855, following his brother and brother- in-law. Admitted to New South Wales Bar and represented the Bar on Barristers Admission Board; puisne judge, Supreme Court from 1860 until 1865. In England was associated with Lord Shaftesbury. Investigated slum housing and testified before the 1859 select committee on the condition of the working classes. In 1861 was a founder and committeeman of Sydney. Founder of Newtown School of the Arts; went on poetry reading tours of country towns; Sydney Mechanics School of the Arts; Home visiting and relief society; Patron of art and literature; collector of Australiana; philosophical society of New South Wales; Liberal but devout low church Anglican; member of church society; advocated wider role for laity.
