Illegitimate son of Bourn Russell (also a Member of the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales) and Elizabeth Watson. Married Esther Emma Leach on 29 January 1842 at Morpeth and had issue, 8 sons and 5 daughters. Arrived in New South Wales about 1829. He was known as William Watson during his life.
