Qualifications, occupations and interests
Lawyer (barrister). Educated at Trinity College, Dublin. In 1838, he was called to the Bar at Kings Inn, Dublin and practised law in Ireland. Was admitted to the New South Wales Bar in 1854 after practising law in New South Wales. Appointed as a District Court Judge on 26 July 1861. Admitted to the Bar in Queensland on 25 July 1867. Appointed Judge of the Queensland Central District Court in 1878 and held the position for four years until his death.

Son of Richard Blake, an Army Captain, and his wife Charlotte. Married (1) Henrietta Eyre Maunsell, who was 17 years old, in 1840 and they had 6 children, of whom three were surviving upon his wife's death in December 1858. Married (2) Jane Townsend, widow of Thomas Townsend; born Smith (aged about 30) on 15 January 1862 (died 17 October 1866); there were no children of this marriage. Married (3) Amelia Caroline Bressow (aged 19) on 5 October 1871. Roman Catholic.
