Qualifications, occupations and interests
Medical practitioner. Educated at London University and in Paris. Licentiate of the Apothecaries' Council in 1835; Member of the Royal College of Surgeons 1838. Staff surgeon to British Legion in Spain 1835 - 1837. In New South Wales, he practised his profession with great success. He was Surgeon to the Benevolent Asylum; examiner in medicine at Sydney University, gained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1855.

Son of William A'Beckett, solicitor, and Sarah Abbott. Married Emma Louisa Elwin at London in 1838 and had issue, 5 daughters and 5 sons. Arrived in New South Wales in 1838. He twice returned to Europe, the second time from 1858 - 1865 when he was compelled to return to New South Wales by failure of companies in which he had invested. Brother of Sir William A'Beckett (1806 - 1869), Chief Justice of Victoria. Father of William Channing A' Beckett (1846 - 1929) who became a member of the Legislative Assembly.
