Qualifications, occupations and interests
Retired merchant and Company Director. Joined Navy at age 11 and became a midshipman within a year. Lieutenant in 1808. retired on half pay in 1814. Master of convict transport and merchant ship at various times between 1815 and 1828. Arrived in Sydney as a resident partner in May 1829. Partnership dissolved in 1834; Carried on as Lamb & Co., woollen brokers and shipping agents. Director of Sydney Alliance Insurance Company. Australian Fire and Life Assurance Company, Sydney. Founder and first Chairman of Sydney. Chamber of Commerce and Sydney Exchange Company 1851 until 1852. Retired with a large fortune in 1855 and journeyed to England. Accepted rank of retired naval commander in 1846. Senior Warden Light, Pilot and Navigation Board. Active in anti-transportation campaign.
