Qualifications, occupations and interests
Medical practitioner; physician in British Navy; landholder. Educated at the University of St Andrews (M. D. 1808) and then joined the British Navy as a physician. In 1809, while physician on the hospital ship 'Gorgon' with the Baltic Fleet, he was instrumental in curbing a serious outbreak of scurvy in the Swedish Navy. For this work he was knighted by the King of Sweden, Charles XIII; he received a British knighthood in 1813.
Honours Received
Knight of the Order of Gustavus Vasa (KGV) (Swedish knighthood from King Charles XIII of Sweden) in July 1809. Knight Bachelor (Kt) in 1813.
Gold medal from the London Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce 'for his successful method of extirpating the stumps of trees' in 1830.

Eldest son of Thomas Jamison (1745 - 1811), surgeon with the First Fleet and pioneer settler, and his wife Rebecca. Arrived in Australia at Sydney in 1814 on the 'Broxbornebury'.
Married in February 1844 to Mary Griffiths, his housekeeper, daughter of John Griffiths, an ex-private in the marines. They already had 2 sons and 5 daughters at the time of their marriage.
His eldest son, Robert Thomas Jamison (1829 - 1878), was a Member of the Legislative Assembly.
