Qualifications, occupations and interests
Landowner and merchant. Educated at The King's School, Canterbury. He resigned his army commission in 1792 and lived at Newington, Kent. Emigrated to New South Wales in April 1806. Was made a magistrate, a member of the Vice Admiralty Court and the committee to inspect public stores. Developed his freehold estates and encouraged the cattle industry.

Church of England. Married (1) Sarah Davies in 1794 who died in childbirth. Married (2) Harriet de Marquett and had issue, 6 daughters and 4 sons.
