Qualifications, occupations and interests
Timber worker and union secretary. Educated at Christian Brothers, Newtown; at an early age commenced work in the Government Printing Office as a messenger boy, left for other employment; worked as a sawyer in timbermills; New South Wales secretary of the Australian Timberworkers Union from 1920 until 1943, and federal president. Was arrested in 1929 strike and found not guilty of conspiracy; director of Labor Motor Funerals Limited, secretary (1943); chairman of directors.
