Endorsed by United Australia Party and Country Party in 1932. Joined Country Party then denounced it for failure to deal with rural indebtedness.

Stock and station agent and farmer. Educated at Wellington public school; joined the postal service on leaving school; later went into business with father as stock and station agents and auctioneers in Wellington; later became a farmer and grazier; became the first president of Wellington branch of the Returned Serviceman's Leagues; vice president of Wellington Pastoral Agricultural and Horticultural Association; member of Farmers and Settlers' Association and Graziers' Association.
Military Service
Served in the Australian Infantry Forces 1915-1918, 18th Battalion, lost a leg in action in France, lieutenant.
