Educated at All Saints' College., Bathurst, Sydney Grammar and University of Sydney., MB Ch M in 1898; further study in Dublin, London and Paris; honorary medical clinical assistant at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital from 1901 until 1902; practised in College Street; purchased Nyrang in Molong district in 1904, in partnership with father in H.E Kater and Son from 1910, owned Yanganbil and Egelabra stations in Warren district, superintendent at Egelabra; sold Nyrang to purchase Eenaweena station in 1920; later purchased Mexborough; adjoining Egelabra; foundation member of Universal Service League in 1915; director of Colonial Sugar Refining Company Limited from 1924 until 1949, Grazcos Co-operative Limited from 1919 until 1965, Globe Worsted Mills Pty Ltd from 1927 until 1965, Liverpool and London and Globe Assurance Company Limited from 1925 until 1965, Newcastle Wallsend Coal Company Pty Ltd from 1933 until 1961 and Peko-Wallsend Investment Ltd; councillor of Graziers Association from 1911 until 1965, executive from 1919 until 1933, president from 1922 until 1925; councillor of Sheepbreeders' Association from 1927 until 1965, president from 1940 until 1944, life governor in 1961; member of round table group.
