Spent early years in Lithgow; moved to Wallsend at age nine; educated at Plattsburg school; at age twelve was employed by Co-op at Colliery Wallsend, later at Elermore Vale mine; joined Miners' Union at an early age, chairman of Co-op of Colliery lodge, member of Northern District Board, general president of Miners' Federation 1922 - 1934; gaoled for part in 1909 strike, member of coal tribunal during war; director of 'Labor Daily' 1924 - 1925; vice president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions 1927 - 1934; Australian Rules interstate player in youth.
