Apprenticed as a carver and mason; ran away to sea on a sailing ship; arrived in Sydney in 1883, went to Orange in 1884, worked as a mason; later became a fuel, lime and cement merchant, had 20 employees; visited England in 1897; became a member of Orange debating team 1901-1902; moved to Sydney in c.1920.
