Qualifications, occupations and interests
Journalist. Educated for Indian Army in Edinburgh and London. Arrived in Queensland by 1861. Became a station hand near Dalby. Revisted Britain c.1863; returned to Queensland to manage Maroon station near Beaudesert; moved to Ipswich. Moved to Victoria and became a drafstman in the Department of Mines from 1866 until 1867. Returned to Queensland. Became a clerk in the Department of Public Lands from 1869 until 1873, wrote a newspaper column and became a newspaper proprieter. Reuter's Agent by 1880. After a political defeat in 1894 failed in farming and mining ventures. Became bankrupt in April 1896, discharged in August. Returned to Queensland working as a journalist.

Son of John Heddle, customs and Orkney Islander, and Elizabeth Dunbar Heddle. Married (1) Jessie Lewis on 23 April 1866 at Brisbane, Queensland and had issue, 1 daughter. Married (2) Agnes Lewis (half sister of first wife) on 11 March 1871 at Brisbane and had issue, 2 daughter and 4 sons.
