Lawyer (barrister). Educated at Sydney Grammar and University of Sydney. (BA 1883; gold medal in Classics). Vice warden at St Pauls College, University of Sydney from 1884 until 1887. Became a part time lecturer and examiner. Associate to Mr Justice Windeyer from 1889 until 1890. Called to Bar in 1890. Practised as a barrister and appointed to High Court in 1913 and resigned that same year. Chairman of Interstate Commission from 1913 until 1920. Member of Industrial Commission of New South Wales from 1926 until 1932. Chairman from 1927 until 1932; resigned and returned to practise as a barrister. Fellow of University of Sydney Senate from 1910 until 1924. delegate to universities congress in London in 1912. Royal Commissioner on shortage of labour in 1911, Industrial Arbitration in 1913. President of Modern Language Association and Fellowship of Australian Writers.
