Qualifications, occupations and interests
Builder, ironmonger and mining entrepreneur. Mother died when he was an infant. Father went to lambing flat diggings where he died in 1861. Worked on goldfields and other rushes with varying success. About 1874 entered building trade in Young district, initially as a journeyman for 4 years, then as a contractor. Built Young court house and railway station. Opened J.G Gough and Co, ironmongers of Young c.1888. Later associated with Flying Mercedes Gold Mining Company and with dredging operations at Craigie. Member of progress committees at Young.

Son of John George Gough, dealer and Sarah Bruce. Married Martha Anne Clift c.1869 at Grenfell and had issue, 5 daughters and 6 sons. Presbyterian.
