Qualifications, occupations and interests
Pastoralist. Educated under Reverend T.C Makinson and at the King's School, Parramatta. Was a pastoralist and stud farmer when he was appointed to the Legislative Council. At 23 years of age, went to Britain and Europe to study sheep breeding. When he returned in 1855, he took charge of his father's stations. Inherited his father's merino stud station at Rawdon, Rylstone and was an outstanding breeder of sheep. Also bred shorthorn cattle and thoroughbreds at Fernhill, Mulgoa. He was joint editor of 'The Stud Book of New South Wales', 1873.

Son of Edward Cox, pastoralist, and his wife Jane Maria Brooks. Father was a nominated Member of the first Legislative Council 1851 - 1855 and a Member of the Legislative Council from 1866 until his death in 1868. Married Millicent Ann Standish, daughter of J.L Standish, in Tralee, Ireland on 19 May 1855 and had issue, 5 sons and 1daughter. Estate for probate purposes was valued at £95,572.
