Educated at Creswick Grammar School; joined father as an auctioneer at Numurkah, Victoria; selected land at Berrigan c.1898 and grew wheat; later purchased Clear Hills Station, Oaklands, also grazing properties in the Upper Hunter and Dubbo districts; secretary of Clear Hills branch of Farmers and Settlers' Association, councillor 1909 - 1911, vice president 1911 - 1916, 1920 - 1930, president 1916 - 1920, treasurer 1930 -1937; founded Farmers and Graziers' Co-operative, Grain, Insurance and Agency Co-operative Limited, managing director 1917 - 1937; also managing director of Producers and Citizens' Assurance Company and Land newspaper; chairman of Australian Farmers' Federated Organisation; secretary of Clear Hills Railway League and Progress Association; councillor of Commonwealth Bureau of Commerce and Industry; noted shot and cricketer in youth.
