Qualifications, occupations and interests
Pastoralist. Learnt accountancy in fathers linen business and worked on a farm. Arrived in Melbourne in April 1856. Jackeroo and overseer and 2 years later was a manager. Sank bores, built dams and deepened creek. By 1872 held 137,000 acres. Visited Ireland in 1871. Established merino stud. Pioneered advanced use of resources and mechanical shears. Famed for hospitality and philanthropy. Gave liberally to the Red Cross during World War 1. On council of Graziers Association in 1911. Vice President of Sheepbreeders Association. Member of Union Club. Famous for philanthropy, giving generously to Barnardo's Homes, Red Cross, Presbyterian Church and Salvation Army, Burnside Open Homes, to hospitals, schools and universities; also to Dreadnought Fund and to the expenses of bushmen's contingent to the Boer War; Union Club in 1881.
