After arrival in Sydney, he made his way to the Braidwood gold fields where he opened the Free Trade Stores in 1858. In late 1860s was wealthy enough to afford legal expenses in a court case. Appointed a magistrate in 1866. Bankrupt on 17 November 1874, the day after he resigned from Parliament. Auctioneer in Sydney by 1880.
Personal
Eldest son of James Rodd and his wife Ann Alabaster, of Rayleigh in Essex, England. Arrived in Sydney on the 'Duncan Dunbar' with his brother George Rodd, in December 1857. Married (1) Jane Gregson, on 11 June 1861, at the Congregational Church, Pitt Street, Sydney, and they had a son; Jane Rodd died soon after the birth, as did their child. Jane Gregson Rodd was the second daughter of Richard Gregson, manager of the Australian Joint Stock Bank in Braidwood and his wife Martha. Married (2) Ellen Alicia Madden, on 23 September 1871 at St Barnabas Church, Sydney, and they had no children. She was the youngest daughter of Patrick and Mary Madden of Sydney.
