Qualifications, occupations and interests
Auctioneer, commercial agent and pastoralist. Educated in Manchester. Travelled to Sydney with his brother, T. S. Mort, in 1840. Went to Moreton Bay and returned to Sydney. Entered Mort & Co., auctioneers and woolbrokers; formed in 1855 to take over the business. Retained pastoral interests and in 1859 held pastoral interests in the Darling Downs. Was a freeholder of land. Director of Fresh Food and Ice Company. Mercantile Bank of Sydney. Illawarra Steam Navigation Company.

Son of Jonathan Mort and Mary Sutcliffe. Married (1) Maria Laidley, daughter of James Laidley, deputy-commissary-general, on 6 May 1846 at Sydney and had issue. Married (2) Emma Louisa Laverock Traill c.1877 - 1878 at Woollahra. Church of England. His first wife's brother was William Laidley, also a Member of the Legislative Assembly; another Laidley sister married his brother, T. S. Mort.
