Qualifications, occupations and interests
Shipowner. Arrived in Van Diemen's Land in 1834. Crossed to Melbourne at a later time and represented the Bank of Van Diemen's Land. Was declared insolvent on 4 March 1842 in Melbourne (Port Phillip District) where he was listed as a merchant. Journeyed to Sydney and became a successful owner of coastal trading vessels. Was the first to run a shipping line between Sydney and Melbourne; in 1851 operated as Port Phillip Packet Office and lived at St Leonards. Retired c.1890, and lived at Lavender Bay and was interested in advancing interests of North Sydney. Founder of North Sydney School of Arts. Warden of St Thomas' Church of England.
