Qualifications, occupations and interests
Businessman and pastoralist. Arrived in Australia c.1835; by 1838 became a storekeeper at Murrurundi in New South Wales. Prospered in early 1840s depression by starting boiling down works and by foreclosing mortgages on runs; later with R.C Dangar and others set up as merchants and commercial agents, styled Rundle, Dangar & Co.,Sydney. Partnership dissolved on 31 March 1859. Director and Chairman of Australian Joint Stock Bank; Director of Sydney Meat Preserving Company from 1870 until 1893. Moruya Silver Mining Company. United Fire and Marine Insurance Company. By 1867 held over 490,000 acres in Liverpool Plains and Bligh districts, over 240,000 acres in Warrego districts, Queensland and in the Darling Downs in Queensland. Trustee of Victoria Club. early member of Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. On committee of Conservative Constitutional Association in 1860.
