Pastoralist, merchant and Company Director. Probably gained business experience in London and Carlisle. Arrived in Sydney c.1836 as an emissary of British capitalists. Partner with R. Lamb in a mixed business (watchmakers, jewellers, merchants, agents and wool buyers) in 1839. Firm dissolved in 1842. Continued as a merchant on his own. By 1859 held runs totalling 273,040 acres in the Clarence District. Also held 164,000 acres on Darling Downs and 26 runs in Maranoa District. Foundation Director of Newcastle Wallsend Coal Company in 1858. Lost a fortune speculating in Spanish railways.

Son of Thomas Irving, farmer. Married Adelaide Thanet in 1833 and had issue, 2 daughters and 4 sons. Church of England.
