Pastoralist. Educated at Fulton's School in Sydney. Inherited capital mostly in the form of livestock in 1928. Granted 500 acres at Rylstone in 1830. Pastoralist. With William Lawson acquired land on Liverpool Plains in 1832. Acquired Yarraman in 1835. Inherited his fathers extensive lands in 1840. Also acquired 19,814 acres in County of Bligh, 400 square miles in the Gwydir District, farms in the County of Cumberland, extensive leases on Liverpool Plains, and much real estate in Sydney. Director of Bank of New South Wales in 1840. Estate valued at £90,000, not including his pastoral empire.

Son of Richard Fitzgerald, settler and public servant and Mary Ford. Married (1) Elizabeth Henrietta Rouse on 11 March 1841 and had issue, 5 daughters and 1 son. Married (2) Charlotte Bennett on 8 October 1864 and had no issue.
