Qualifications, occupations and interests
Company Manager. Secretary of the Van Diemen's Land Company 1824 - 1841. At the age of five he attended a school at Sedgeley Park and thence to Ushaw College. Worked in a Liverpool office for two years and rejected his father's assistance to study for a profession or to buy a business, sailed for Brazil but soon returned. Entered into a partnership with John Raine, sailed with his wife and arrived in Hobart Town in February 1820. Returned to Australia and visited Melbourne in 1839 and returned with his family to settle there in 1842. Purchased a pastoral run near Heathcote. Was soon immersed in public affairs and became a large leaseholder.

Third son of John Curr, civil engineer, who managed the estate and coal mines of the Duke of Norfolk. Married Elizabeth Micklethwaite at Sheffield and had issue, 15 children. Was survived by his wife and 11 children.
