Eldest of three sons born to William James Askin, sailor and later tram driver and Ellen Laura Halliday, widow. His parents later married on 29 September 1916. Various recorded birthdates of 1901, 1907 and 1909. However, 4 April 1907 at Sydney Women's Hospital, Crown Street, Sydney is considered actual birthdate. Married Mollie Isabelle Underhill on 5 February 1937 and had no issue. Church of England.
