Qualifications, occupations and interests
Grazier. Educated at Scotch College, Melbourne; returned to family grazing property at Lake Cowal near Forbes which managed until it was subdivided and sold in 1930's; also controlled Muzzlewood on Monaro and Warilya near Gundagai; purchased a small block near Forbes, experimented with irrigation; later moved to Clifton near Locksley; was active in Western Movement for the new states and co-founder of the Riverina Movement; studied conditions in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic and other European Countries in 1938; member of the Commonwealth Liquid Fuel Control Board 1941-1942; councillor of National Roads and Motorists Association for five years.
Military Service
Served in Australian Infantry Forces 1916-1917, 1st Battalion, lost a leg in action on Somme, became a corporal.
