Educated at Tenterden and Belgravia, Inverell, public schools; worked in Lands Department at Narrabri; resigned to become a teacher at Inverell; went to Sydney to learn the building trade; in 1905 established his own business in Inverell as a contractor, expanded to sawmilling and brickworks; had a controlling interest in food firm, Snowclads; owned grazing and farming properties at Ashford, Yetman and Inverell districts; director of Kautz Bakery and Freezing Works Limited; became a life member of Inverell Pastoral and Agricultural Association; member of Inverell Chamber of Commerce; member of New South Wales Graziers' Association; vice president of New South Wales Rifle Association; president of North West District Rifle Association; chairman of Inverell Railway League in 1923; member of Better Communications League, vice president 1944 - 1958

Roman Catholic. Funeral at Inverell cemetery from Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.
