Lawyer (barrister). Educated at Hutchins School, Hobart, University of Tasmania and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, exhibitioner, MA; called to the Bar, Inner Temple in London in 1901 and to the New South Wales Bar in 1901; in practice mainly as a consultant and adviser, especially constitutional matters; counsel assisting Royal Commission on Commonwealth Constitution from 1926 until 1927; appointed as a Justice of the New South Wales Supreme Court and Probate Judge in 1935, chief judge in Equity of New South Wales from 1939 - 1947; wrote leading articles for Sydney Morning Herald and Daily Telegraph; president of British Drama League; active in Round Table group, in Institute of International Affairs, first editor from 1929 - 1935 in Australian Quarterly; author in 1926, 1940 and 1948; Australian and Union Clubs.
