Educated at Grafton Grammar and private school, West Maitland; partially crippled by an accident in boyhood; assisted father on the family property; purchased a dairy farm in 1895 at Lower Southgate; later became an auctioneer, estate agent and valuer, Grafton; member of Grafton Land Board and Licensing Bench; president of Clarence Pastoral and Agricultural Society in 1905; president of North Coast Agricultural Society and Association, chairman of Grafton District Hospital Board; chairman of Grafton Racecourse and Recreation Trust; member of Clarence River Jockey Club; chairman of Grafton Common Trust and Showground Trust ; helped found local creamery, honorary secretary for many years; foundation member of Lower Southgate Farmers' Union, secretary and president of the District Council; Freemason.
