Storekeeper. Educated at Stroud; entered father's business; employed by F.G Crofton in Lismore in 1866, then in partnership with him opened a general store at Coraki; later opened his own general store at Coraki; promoted butter factories on North Coast; chairman of Coraki Co-operative Butter Company; president of Northern Rivers Butter Factories Association; founder and first president of the Primary Producers' Union from 1916 until 1924, president of Richmond River district council until 1919 when moved to Sydney to become a full time representative of the Union; director of Co-operative Implement Company and of the British Australian Land Company; producer representative on Necessary Commodities Commission from 1914 until 1920; employer representative of of New South Wales Board of Trade in 1918 and New South Wales representative on the Commonwealth Board of Trade; member of Commonwealth Dairy Council during the war, of State Butter Advisory Committee and of committees preparing a stabilisation scheme for dairy products; member of Coraki Railway League in 1908, Freemason.
