Qualifications, occupations and interests
Shearer and union official. Arrived in Victoria in 1870. Drover between Queensland and Victoria. Went to Western Australia, speculated and lost everything. Worked passage back to Melbourne. Did fencing, tank sinking and shearing. Connected with Shearers' Union from inception; secretary of the Scone branch in 1891. Travelling agent for Australian Shearers' Union. Helped to form the Labor Leagues in Hunter River district in 1891; refused the pledge.

Married at the Wesleyan Church, Hay, New South Wales, on 9 February 1889 to Rosina (Rosinia) Victoria Beaudoin, daughter of Jean Baptiste Beaudoin and his wife Sarah Saunders, of Dunolly, Victoria and had issue, 7 daughters and 1 son; 2 daughters died in infancy.
