1690 - Counter Terrorism and Corrections - PROFESSIONAL AND FAMILY VISITS FOR PRISONERS

Jackson, Rose to the Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning representing the Minister for Counter Terrorism and Corrections

(1) Can the Minister provide the time-frame and details for the return of professional and family visits for prisoners in New South Wales?

Answer -

I am advised:

In-person social visits remain suspended at this point in time due to the ongoing risk of community transmission and entry of COVID-19 in the correctional environment. Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) will continue to review the existing arrangements, however, there is no set date as to when restrictions will be eased.

Professional visits to inmates have dramatically reduced and been replaced with telephone and Audio Visual Link visits. Unless there are exceptional circumstances, all face to face visits to prisons by Legal Counsel have been suspended.

Decisions to relax or remove any of the measures that CSNSW has implemented will be informed by expert advice and the need to ensure safe and secure CSNSW facilities.
