4735 - PUBLIC HOUSING SHORTFALL

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Family and Community Services, and Minister for Women

Regarding the recent report from the NSW Auditor General concluding that the New South Wales social housing system is only capable of meeting 44% of social housing needs:

  1. What action has the Government taken to address this issue?
  2. What action does the Government plan to take in the future to address this shortfall?
Answer -

The Auditor General's report was timely reminder about the inherent structural deficiencies in the public housing system the previous Labor government left behind.

Measures the Government is taking to fix the system include making better use of the 35,000 vacant bedrooms in public housing, ensuring existing tenants are paying the correct amount of rent, and making public housing waiting lists transparent so clients can make informed decisions.
