135 - EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAMS

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Mental Health, Minister for Medical Research, Assistant Minister for Health, Minister for Women, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault

With reference to the report by the Committee for Economic Development of Australia titled 'Addressing Entrenched Disadvantage in Australia', what is the Government doing to address one of the report's key recommendations to improve early intervention programs to minimise hospital admissions for those with mental illness?

Answer -

I am advised:

In December 2014, the Government released, Living Well, A Strategic Plan for Mental Health in NSW 2014-2024, and committed an additional $115 million over three years to strengthen mental health care in New South Wales.

The Government provides a range of early intervention programs to minimise the impact of ill health and promote recovery for people with mental illness, including a comprehensive range of community support services to minimise hospital admissions.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) programs and services operate in the home, community and in hospital and school settings and include a number of early intervention programs to support young people and their families. A significant focus of many of these programs is to work across services and agencies to provide an integrated care platform that is particularly effective for complex experiences where there are interactions of illness and social pressures.
