6438 - HOT WATER POLICY IN SCHOOLS

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education representing the Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning
HOT WATER POLICY IN SCHOOLS

Considering the NSW Department of Education has Work Health and Safety Policy and procedures to assist schools to develop local risk management practices, but does not have a specific hot water policy that would include such things as hot water drinks and hot water urns, is there a commitment to having a state-wide hot water policy, which ensures that there is no ambiguity on policy between schools?

Answer -

Although the Department does not have a specific hot water policy, the Department’s Work Health and Safety Policy and procedures assist schools to develop local risk management practices to address the health and safety of students and other people in our workplaces. Risk management procedures and related resources support the identification of potential risks and development of the most suitable strategies to eliminate or control them at each school.

The Department’s website provides guidance to assist schools in managing the risk of burns including prevention and treatment. Dedicated information on burns is also available on the ecare system and mandatory training for all staff.
