NEWCASTLE WOMENS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ADVOCACY SERVICE

The Newcastle University has worked with Newcastle Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service to create mobile mock court for victims of domestic violence to build up their confidence in a court room. How does the Government plan to support this initiative?

Answer -
NEWCASTLE WOMENS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ADVOCACY SERVICE

I am advised:

Newcastle Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service (WDVCAS) delivers best-practice services to women experiencing domestic and family violence in Newcastle, Belmont, Toronto and surrounding areas.

Newcastle WDVCAS was successful in obtaining a $150,000 (excluding GST) grant as part of the second tranche of COVID-19 domestic and family violence stimulus funding in January 2021 to support the innovative mock courtroom project.

Newcastle WDVCAS uses the mock courtroom space for:

  • Helping domestic and family violence victims prepare for hearing,
  • Enabling domestic and family violence victims to give evidence remotely, in part due to COVID-19 preventing victims from physically attending court,
  • Working with police prosecutors to hold pre-hearing clinics for domestic and family violence victims, and
  • Training community workers about WDVCAS’ role and the court process.
