9933 - AWARENESS OF SPEED LIMIT CHANGES

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight

Considering that more than $1 million in fines have been issued in the last 6 months from the Griffiths Road, Lambton and the Thomas Street, Wallsend speed cameras, what programs has or is the Government putting in place to ensure drivers are aware of the speed limit changes along that section of road?

Answer -

I am advised:

Roads and Maritime Services put the following measures in place to advise motorists of the change in speed limit from 70 kilometres per hour to 60 kilometres per hour:

  • 12 portable Variable Message Signs along Thomas Street, Newcastle Road and Griffiths Road for 25 days in the lead up to and after the change in speed limit.
  • 27 speed zone signs installed westbound to indicate the 60 kilometres per hour speed limit and pavement numerals at ten locations.
  • 23 speed zone signs installed eastbound to indicate the 60 kilometres per hour speed limit and pavement numerals at seven locations.

Roads and Maritime also issued a media release on 11 March 2018, and the Centre for Road Safety distributed an email update to subscribers. There was also coverage in local newspapers, on local radio stations, and on social media.
