6121 - HUNTER NEW ENGLAND HEALTH LIBRARIES

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Health and Medical Research

Noting that health libraries are vital for research and training of clinicians, why was critical funding of $420,000 from Hunter New England Health Libraries withdrawn and what work is being undertaken for the funding to resume?

Answer -

The University of Newcastle (UoN) has advised that effective 1 July 2021, it will cease to provide funding of $420,000 to Hunter New England Local District to provide library services for UoN students. The UoN is introducing a new digital model where library services will be provided online, with remote support and the option to book a librarian on an as-needs basis.

The UoN has decided to stop the funding to the District because its students will no longer require the library services provided by the District under the funding arrangement.
